Grand Award – Walter P Moore of Kansas City
Project: Allianz Field
Client: Minnesota United FC
Allianz Field, in St. Paul, is the home of Minnesota United FC. The owner desired a soccer-specific stadium that would compete against international venues serving as an exemplary piece of art and architecture. Creating a world-class stadium required engineering excellence and showcased the multiple ways structural engineering can influence a project. First, Walter P Moore collaborated with material manufacturers to develop a clear polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) laminate with a fiberglass yarn weave that was weathertight, transparent, strong, flexible, and colored – resulting in an iconic façade. Next, was a digital design process using a common central geometry file for structural analysis, architectural design, and ultimately, material fabrication. Finally, by integrating the structural frame analysis and fabric membrane analysis allowed for the optimization of the entire structural system. The influence of the structural engineering team led to a quintessential design of a superlative stadium.
