Project: The University of Pikeville Health Professions Education Building
Client: University of Pikeville
The University of Pikeville’s new 100,000-square-foot, seven-story Health Professions Education Building houses the Kentucky College of Optometry and School of Nursing, providing healthcare to the underserved Appalachian region of eastern Kentucky, Virginia, and West Virginia. Pikeville’s mountainous location required the high-rise structure be built into a steep hillside presenting several challenges – all which were addressed while making the building one of the most energy efficient in the region. Features included: LED lighting with various control technologies; Dedicated outside air system with energy recovery and local fan coil units to minimize vertical shafts, maximize ceiling heights, and provide a level of inexpensive redundancy; Loading dock tunnel; South entrance at level two and north entrance at level six; A south exterior of mostly glass, offsetting the below-grade spaces on the north, requiring careful consideration for HVAC and architectural lighting to achieve the desired nighttime appearance.
