Project: MoDOT 2018 Statewide Aerial and Terrestrial LiDAR Program
Client: Missouri Department of Transportation
The Missouri Department of Transportation’s 2018 Aerial and Terrestrial LiDAR Program was 15 large-scale individual corridor surveys covering a total of 96.2 miles and more than 1,000,000 survey points with 1,000 GB of data. Specialized equipment, technical training and quality control were key components that needed to be seamlessly coordinated and reviewed for quality at every phase. Combining aerial and mobile LiDAR projects was a first for MoDOT. The mobile LiDAR projects were added as a pilot project to obtain more accurate survey files on urban projects that will remain on the same alignment and have sidewalks added. The last layer of complexity was the addition of conventional survey that obtains mapping in areas the LiDAR scanners cannot see, and also added underground cables and drainage systems. The combination of these survey methods contributed to the logistics and complexity of the project.
