Honor Award – Burns & McDonnell, Kansas City
Project: West Blue River Interceptor Sewer
Client: Kansas City Water Services Department
When one of the piers failed at the West Blue Interceptor in Kansas City, Missouri and caused the reinforced interceptor to collapse and dump sewage into the creek below, the City of Kansas City needed a long-term solution to replace the failed aerial pipeline and pier system. Using the design-build method, Burns & McDonnell, in partnership with Leath & Sons, designed and constructed a 72-inch diameter steel pipe mounted on an improved pier system to replace the 375-foot long aerial portion of the interceptor. With careful coordination, planning, and communication, the pipeline was back in full service in 105 days – saving the City more than $630,000 in additional estimated operating costs.
