Grand Award – Burns & McDonnell, Kansas City
Project: Meramec Energy Center Ash Pond Closure
Client: Ameren Missouri
Burns & McDonnell was selected by Ameren Missouri to help enact their approach to CCR rule compliance through implementation of the Meramec Energy Center Ash Pond Closure project (MEC). MEC is an 831-megawatt natural gas- and coal-fueled generating facility. The scope for Burns & McDonnell included reviewing operational practices; developing a constructible and operable design that would accommodate diverse regulatory requirements; conducting a process water rerouting evaluation; preparing CCR management, dewatering and stabilization specifications; and evaluating, designing and bidding alternative final cover systems. The project was successfully completed on schedule and within budget. Conceived and constructed while the Missouri Department of Natural Resources was developing its ash pond closure regulations, the project contributed to MDNR’s rule-making process and helped establish best practices for balancing federal and state requirements. The selected alternative cover for one ash pond saved approximately $2 million in construction costs and will produce long-term savings as well.
